The School of Science and Technology of NU with its project-oriented education and flexible curriculum is the ideal school to undertake the education of future Robotics and Mechatronics engineers and scientists.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (B.SC.) IN ROBOTICS AND MECHATRONICS UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM

The program is the nation’s first undergraduate Robotics and Mechatronics degree program. It is also one of the first Robotics and Mechatronics programs in the world. The program will educate young engineers for working with latest intelligent robotics and mechatronics systems in different industries, creating local robotics and mechatronics companies and preparing them for graduate work. Robotics students have access to state-of-the-art facilities available at the department. There are opportunities for students to be members of the Student Robotics Club, to participate in the faculty research projects and do industrial internships. Graduates will be prepared for an industrial and research-oriented career, either working as engineers with advanced technological systems or directly pursuing further research (graduate school) in top international universities.

Program Structure

Years 1 and 2 of our core courses follow a common curriculum, providing a fundamental technical knowledge and necessary analytical skills.

Years 3 and 4 introduce a strong list of robotics and mechatronics technical elective courses such that the students can focus on a special area of robotics & mechatronics. Natural science and humanities elective courses will help you develop entrepreneurship, communication skills, provide an insight of the increasingly global context of modern engineering and technology to make you as an intelligent and professionally successful engineer or manager.

Graduation project in Year 4 will combine the knowledge and skills acquired by the students in a culminating design experience.

Program Syllabus

Year 1 – Fundamental Engineering & Science Skills

The following courses are designed to provide strong fundamental engineering & science skills:

  • Introduction to Robotics
  • Web Programming and Problem Solving
  • Computer Aided Drawing
  • Fundamentals of Programming
  • Laboratory in Machining
  • Calculus I and II
  • Physics and Engineering with Lab I and II
  • Communications I and II
  • Kazakh Language elective

Year 2 – Core Engineering & Technology Skills

Year 1 themes continue but at a more advanced level. Students develop key skills for the engineering profession, including team working on practical design projects:

  • Electrical and Electronics Circuits I and II with Lab
  • Signals and Sensing with Lab
  • Microcontrollers with Lab
  • Mechanics: Statics and Dynamics
  • System Dynamics and Modeling
  • Linear Algebra with Applications
  • Introduction to Differential Equations
  • History of Kazakhstan
  • Basic Science and Humanities Electives

Year 3 – Specialist Engineering & Technology Skills

Students develop core engineering and technology skills through classes that include the following topics:

  • Mechanical Design 1 and 2
  • Linear control Theory with Lab
  • Electromechanical Systems with Lab
  • Basic Science and Humanities Electives
  • Technical Electives including
    • Embedded Systems
    • Image Processing
    • Industrial Automation

In summer students have an industrial or academic internship.

Year 4 – Engineering for your Professional Future

In the forth year students are given the opportunity to choose from a range of technical electives and work on your graduation project. Classes will include:

High achieving students can assign Nazarbayev University Preparatory Program (CPS/Foundation program) credits towards their undergraduate degree mathematics and physics courses in mathemattics and physics and, thus, have flexibilty to devote more time on graduation projects or take additional electives of interest.

 

ROBOTICS AND MECHATRONICS MINOR UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS

Students of other Nazarbayev Univerisity majors are welcome to take our Robotics and Mechatronics courses and study with our students to earn a minor degree in the following programs:

Robotics & Mechatronics Minor

This program has emphasis on studying principles of robot and mechatronic system control and design and is suitable to physics and other majors students.

Intelligent Robotics Minor

This program has emphasis on robotic system programming and is suitable to computer science major students as well as other major students.

General Requirements

A student wishing to enroll to the minor programs should have GPA not less than 2.5. A student can enroll only to one minor program offered by the Department of Robotics and Mechatronics. To obtain the robotics & mechatronics minor degree a student must complete a Nazarbayev University undergraduate major program

 

MINOR DEGREE OPPORTUNITIES FOR ROBOTICS AND MECHATRONICS STUDENTS

Robotics and Mechatronics students can combine their main studies with the courses from other departments at the School of Science and Technology, School of Social Sciences and Humanities getting minor degrees in other fields. For example, students may choose to study:

  • Robotics and Mechatronics Degree with Computer Science Minor
  • Robotics and Mechatronics Degree with Math (Physics/Chemistry/Biology/Communication) Minor
  • School of Social Sciences and Humanities:
